How to stabilise equestrian ground without using concrete?

The solution is based on increasing load-bearing capacity and trafficability while preserving vertical drainage. Unlike concrete, which creates an impermeable surface, using cellular stabilisation tiles (TEKIDE type) ensures a trafficable surface while allowing rainwater to infiltrate the ground, in compliance with water management regulations. The recommended installation follows three stages, depending on the soil type and the expected load on the platform:

- Levelling and Smoothing: Flatten the surface. If necessary, excavate 5 to 10 cm and lay a geotextile membrane (especially for clay-based soils).
- Increasing Load-Bearing Capacity: Install a foundation layer (e.g., 0/31.5mm aggregate or larger for heavy machinery access). The thickness (usually 10 to 20 cm) should be adapted to the traffic constraints and the subgrade's natural stability.
- Geotextile & Filling: A geotextile is optional but useful to prevent fines migration. If used, cover it with gravel or sand before laying the tiles. Regardless of the tiles' orientation, the cells must be filled.
- Installation and Infilling: Fill the cells with non-abrasive sand or gravel (if installed with the honeycomb side facing up).

Do you offer solutions for racecourses and training tracks?

Tekidé equips professional racing facilities (Trotting, Gallops) with infrastructure that meets the highest racecourse standards. We specialize in installing swan-neck rails, paddock fencing, and handrails for training centres and racecourses. The specific offset design of our rails keeps the horse away from the posts, ensuring maximum safety for both horse and jockey in the event of a fall or contact. This design also simplifies track maintenance by allowing harrows and levellers to pass more easily. Our materials are resilient, durable, and engineered for heavy-duty professional use. All our rails and barriers are certified "Origine France Garantie" (Guaranteed French Origin), eco-designed, and 100% recyclable.

Can I install stabilisation tiles myself without concrete foundations?

Our systems are designed for concrete-free installation, requiring no heavy construction. This reduces both costs and environmental impact, while allowing you to dismantle and move them if necessary (e.g., rented land, changing pastures). To ensure long-term durability, we strongly recommend following these technical guidelines, which vary according to your soil type (clay, sandy, limestone, etc.):

- Levelling (Gradient): A 1% to 2% slope is beneficial for rainwater runoff.
Surface Preparation: The area must be smooth and free of uneven patches. A sand levelling layer may be necessary to smooth out any deformations.
- Foundation Layer: The aggregate size (grading) depends on your soil's natural load-bearing capacity and the required traffic level (e.g., machinery access).
- Geotextile Membrane: Not always required, but useful to prevent sub-material migration. If used, ensure it is covered with gravel or sand so the tiles can anchor firmly into the ground.
- Tile Laying: The interlocking system secures the entire surface, allowing it to withstand heavy machinery and preventing individual tiles from lifting or shifting.

What fence height should I choose for an arena or a paddock?

Fence height is determined by the intended use and the type of horses to ensure an effective visual deterrent:

- Riding Arenas: 1.10 m to 1.20 m (2 rails) to define the perimeter without obstructing the rider.
- Paddocks & Fields: 1.30 m to 1.50 m for standard riding horses.
- Stallions: 1.50 m to 1.60 m (3 rails mandatory) for maximum security.

Safety Tip: Maintain a ground clearance of 40 to 50 cm to prevent horses from getting their legs trapped or stuck under the bottom rail.

How to design an Active Stable and how much space is required?

Active Stables are based on the separation of functional zones (resting, feeding, and watering) to stimulate movement and respect the horse's fundamental needs: forage, social herd life, and freedom of movement. The points below provide only a brief overview of the many factors to consider. Every project is unique and requires specific planning to determine the best possible layout for these areas. The TÉKIDÉ team is here to support you with your ground stabilisation requirements.

- Surface Area: Allow a minimum of 100 m² per horse to maintain a healthy herd dynamic.
- Flooring: Stabilising high-traffic areas (hay racks, automated feeders) with heavy-duty tiles is imperative to prevent mud accumulation and associated diseases, such as mud fever.
- Traffic Flow: Create draining stabilised tracks to encourage natural hoof wear and prevent muddy areas caused by repeated trampling.

PVC vs. Wood Fencing: Which is safer for your horses?

PVC and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) are now the leading technical standards compared to wood, which carries risks of splintering and requires heavy maintenance. They offer three major advantages for safety and daily use:

- Resilience: The material absorbs high-velocity impacts without snapping, protecting both horse and rider.
- Durability: UV-treated, rot-proof, and maintenance-free.
- Smooth Surface: No risk of injury from friction or biting (prevents cribbing/crib-biting).

Do I need planning permission to install stables or field shelters?

It depends on the footprint (ground surface area), in accordance with French Planning Regulations (Code de l'Urbanisme):

< 20 m²: A Prior Declaration of Works (Déclaration Préalable de Travaux) at your local town hall is generally sufficient.

> 20 m²: A Planning Permission (Permis de Construire) is mandatory.

Please note: rules may vary depending on your municipality's Local Urban Plan (PLU) (e.g., agricultural or protected zones). We always recommend consulting your local planning department before installation.

What is the best flooring for a horse stable ?

Vulcanised rubber mats are the ideal technical solution to complement concrete floors and straw or wood shavings bedding, providing enhanced comfort for your horses. They meet the horse's physiological needs:

- Thermal insulation: Provides a barrier against rising cold from the ground.
- Secure grip: Prevents slipping when the horse is lying down or getting up.
- Orthopaedic health: Relieves joints for horses standing for long periods.

Rubber mats also help reduce bedding consumption by up to 40%.

How can I best prepare for the installation of my stabilisation grids?

Your stabilising slabs must be laid on previously prepared ground, and must not be laid directly in the mud.

The preparation of the ground to be stabilised depends on the use you will be making of your stabilising mats and the direction in which you will be laying them.

In any case, the better prepared, smoother and more even the ground, the better your installation will be.

You'll find more information on the installation conditions for our stabilising grids in the FAQ section on the ÉKI Cob and ÉKI Shet product pages.

For any further information, our team is at your disposal. You can contact our customer service department using our contact form.
